Foreword
The major problem that confronted me while compiling the catalogue was how to pare the central essay of a surfeit of details, the inclusion of which would have made the argument cumbersome. I have chosen to divide the text into two: the central essay, which deals with Moshe Safdie’s identity as an architect and with how it is expressed and implemented in his architectural language; and separate entries which are a kind of personal visiting-cards for each museum, in which I have named the persons and institutions involved in each project, listed technical details such as area, cost, and materials, and described the environment and the background of each project, the orientation in the building, and the lighting methods.
The exhibition and the catalogue are the fruit of more than two years of collaborative work, and a considerable number of people have been involved in the processes of crystallizing and realizing them. I would like to take this opportunity to express my warmest thanks to them: to Prof. Mordechai Omer, Curator of the University Gallery and lecturer in the Art History Department at Tel Aviv University — my teacher and supervisor who approved, supported, advised, contributed from his experience, and backed the complex project; to Dr. Edina Meyer-Maril and Prof. Rudolf Klein, the spirit of whose lectures hovers over all the stages of the research; and of course to Moshe Safdie, who allowed me to penetrate into the depths of his oeuvre, spared no effort, devoted many hours to conversations, and collaborated in the production of a film about the Children’s Museum and the Transport Memorial on the Mount of Remembrance (the Yad Vashem Complex, Jerusalem), in the preparation of the computerized interview, and in the production of the simulation of the new Historic Museum at Yad Vashem. My thanks, too, to Helen Kariv from Moshe Safdie’s office in Jerusalem; to Laura Norton, Amanda Miller and Sharon McHugh from his office at Boston; and to Daniella Rohan from the Archives of Canadian Architecture at McGill University, Montreal.
I would also like to express my thanks to the devoted staff at the Gallery: to Irit Tal, Sarah Keller, David Herscovitz, Mara Avanov, and especially Rachel Stolar, who was a partner in every stage of the work; and also to Itai Shechory and the entire staff of Tamooz, Exhibitions and Museums Ltd., who saw the design of the exhibition as a challenge and spared no professional effort to bring the diverse materials to complete and fascinating expression; to Hava Mordohovich, who designed the invitation, the poster, and the catalogue with much talent, and succeeded in capturing the essence of Moshe Safdie’s oeuvre; to Daphna Raz, who contributed her talent and experience to the delicate weaving of the text; to Richard Flantz, for the knowledgeable editing and translation of the English version of the complicated text; to Sarah Finkelstein and Devis Isoifzan of the Atidim Library at the David Azrieli School of Architecture at Tel Aviv University; to Amalia Margolin, who directed the film with great sensitivity, and to Galia Bador who produced it.
I send special thanks to all the people, in Israel and abroad, who have been in constant and intensive contact with us in the course of these last two years; to Leon Recanati and the staff of the Israel National Museum of Science in Haifa, who believed in the importance of the exhibition and assisted in its realization; and to the dear members of my family – Lilach, who helped in the research, Limor, who located books abroad, Shahaf, Eilon and Mayor Caspi, and my mother Bronislava Roshkovski (Roizen), who were there for me.
